Young Republicans = Troublemakers

Police have put out a search for 3 white guys in red sweatshirts. They were spotted wearing their gang colors and causing mischief in the Pittsburgh area. We caught up with a young man in homestead who is tired of the same old story, "I don't think these kids commit crimes BECAUSE they're white, I just think they're born in to an unfortunate situation. I mean they have to have two parents their whole childhood who are around to feed them these lines of bullshit. They grow up without the opportunities that black kids have, without the chance to realize that Fox News is full of crap and that Obama isn't a terrorist or a socialist. It's really just a sad story, I feel sorry for those kids."

Ok fine, that paragraph I embelished. But here's the actual story:
Anti-Obama vandalism reported
Thursday, November 06, 2008

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Police in two Western Pennsylvania communities 70 miles apart are investigating reports of harassment of people who supported President-elect Barack Obama.

In Greenville, Mercer County, state police say someone spray painted the word "Obama" on a vehicle and then set it on fire. It was discovered early yesterday.

In Forest Hills in suburban Pittsburgh, Jerome Tompkins tells WPXI-TV that someone left a note with a racial slur on the windshield of his car.

Among other things, the note says "now that you voted for Obama, just watch out for your house."

Police have not charged anyone in either incident. The owners of both vehicles are black.

Hmm. Can't say if it's a hate crime per se, but it sure might be.

Wouldn't it be nice to tone down the emotion on these elections? It is also unfortunate that police were prepared for possible riots on large scales if Obama lost. Looting, arson, beatings. We can all hope that this historic election will go a long way toward defusing some of the still-simmering racial animum that divides us. When people live separate lives with separate cultures and aren't welcomed in yours, that's a recipe for disaster. We need to make America the "melting pot" we all grew up believing it was.

someday, i really hope, someday soon.

i like to think of our country as a beautiful patchwork quilt.

Amen to brewing up the melting pot ASAP, well said.

Though, I hope we don't loose the passion and emotion of elections. I would like to see it channeled to the policies and not to the race/fear mongering that was encouraged by factions of both sides. I'd also like to see some of the passion brought to local elections. Afterall, who has more power over our lives Luke or Barack? It's a lot closer then the local press coverage and water cooler discussions would make you believe.

Call me a cynic, but I think we're gonna see a lot more of this type of nonsense in the days to come. I've come across some real whackos who spout off all kinds of stupidity regarding race and Obama.

And it makes me sad ... and a bit afraid.

These people need to put their energy into officials' campaigns that they support instead of threatening others -- but I'm sure that would make entirely too much sense. Why actually join the process when a torching someone's car is so much easier?
